Thibaut Courtois’ return at the end of the 2023-24 campaign came as a massive boost to Carlo Ancelotti’s plans. The Belgian superstar swiftly returned to match fitness and even started the Champions League final at Wembley.

The veteran’s return, however, pushed Andriy Lunin back into the shadow despite his unbelievable season. With the new season quickly approaching, the youngster understandably has doubts about his future.

The Ukrainian star has been linked with a move to Juventus where he can serve as a starting option and is tempted to accept the deal. As it stands, his future is uncertain.

The Kepa option

Should Lunin opt to leave Real Madrid, Kepa Arrizabalaga’s return to the club is not ruled out.

The Chelsea superstar served as an able option in goal last season and was even the team’s starting shot-stopper at the beginning of last season. He does not see a role on the Real Madrid bench with bad eyes as is open to a return.

As revealed in a recent report by SPORT, however, Los Blancos are unwilling to meet Chelsea’s €25 million price tag for the goalkeeper.

Real Madrid will make an offer to the London-based club if Lunin leaves but it will not be at the aforementioned valuation.

An uncertain renewal

While word in the Spanish capital assures that Lunin is on his way to renewing with Real Madrid, it is unclear how far one can read into such reports. After all, it will not be easy for the youngster to settle for a smaller role after his special season with Los Blancos.

With interest from Juventus and Arsenal on the cards, Florentino Perez and Co will have it complicated to tie down the player without a starting spot.

The coming weeks, needless to say, will be decisive on that front and Los Blancos must keep their options open. Kepa, as a familiar figure at the club, stands out as a great option.

Real Madrid are in active negotiations with LOSC Lille for the transfer of Leny Yoro. After weeks of impasse, the club appear to have made some ground in the race to sign the Frenchman.

However, should the Yoro deal fall through in the coming weeks, Real Madrid have identified Lazio’s Mario Gila as the ideal alternative.

Formerly of RM Castilla, Gila currently plies his trade for Lazio and has emerged as a key defensive lynchpin for the Italian outfit, impressing onlookers with his technique and discipline.

Mario Gila picks up fresh injury

However, in a major development, it appears Mario Gila has picked up a fresh injury during training, reports Diario AS.

In the pre-season camp at Auronzo di Cadore, Gila appears to have fractured his left foot and could be out for several weeks.

Lazio confirmed the defender’s injury, stating, “Mario Gila underwent clinical and instrumental examinations which revealed a fracture of the phalanx of the big toe of his left foot, suffered during training.”

Gila has started taking the appropriate treatment and the extent of his injury will be known soon. However, as things stand, the defender could be out for at least the next few weeks.

What does this mean for Real Madrid?

Mario Gila’s fresh injury setback is sure to dwindle any hopes of a potential return to Real Madrid this summer.

In any case, Gila’s chances of returning to Santiago Bernabeu were slim given that Real Madrid have finally made some ground in the deal to sign top defensive target Leny Yoro.

Los Blancos, though, would have liked having someone like Gila available as an alternative, especially with LOSC Lille still demanding a fortune for the Frenchman.

Unfortunately, that might not be an option anymore, no thanks to Gila’s injury. The club, though, will keep a close eye on the Spaniard’s injury situation, knowing he could return to fitness before the end of the summer break.
