Luka Modric finds himself staring at an uncertain future beyond the ongoing campaign as his contract at Real Madrid stands to expire on June 30, 2024.

The Croatian international was in a similar predicament last season as well, but opted to renew with Los Blancos, despite receiving a mega-money offer from Saudi Arabia.

But, Modric has gone from being a permanent fixture in the starting XI to more of a rotation player this season, with Carlo Ancelotti banking on the younger generation of midfielders.

As such, there is uncertainty surrounding his continuity, with many expecting this to be his final season at Real Madrid.

No contacts made

Now, MARCA has come forward with an update on the situation of Modric and a potential new contract at Real Madrid.

As per the update, there have been no contacts between the club and the player regarding a new deal so far.

Modric, for his part, has stayed quiet on the matter of his future and has not made up his mind yet, even as he continues to prove his worth and value on the field each time he gets an opportunity.

Despite being 38 years old and having won almost everything in his career, Modric continues to dream of adding more titles with Real Madrid as well as tasting success with the Croatian national team.

When asked about his ambitions for 2024 earlier this week, he said: “The plan is to continue making history, continue winning titles and hopefully it will happen this season. It is also important to enjoy every moment because you never know how long this is going to last in the best club in the world.”

Final decision up to Modric

Like it was last season, Real Madrid and Modric will likely enter discussions over a new deal sometime in the second half of the campaign.

And, if the player continues to deliver like he has been despite getting limited chances, Los Blancos might consider offering him another one-year extension, which would allow him to become the oldest player to represent the club, breaking Ferenc Puskas’ record.

However, as is the case with his midfield partner Toni Kroos, the final decision would be up to Modric himself and whether he wishes to stay or not. The renewal of Ancelotti could also play a key role in the veteran star’s final decision.

Speaking in an interview with Sport BILD (h/t AS), Germany legend Michael Ballack has claimed that Bayer Leverkusen sensation Florian Wirtz is ready to play for Real Madrid.

Wirtz is a player that Real Madrid have been closely monitoring for a while now, with the German sensation being seen as a long-term replacement for Toni Kroos, who announced his retirement yesterday.

A move for Wirtz is being planned for the summer of 2025 and Ballack believes that the Bundesliga title winner with Leverkusen is ready for the big move to the Santiago Bernabeu.

“Wirtz is ready for Real Madrid,” said Ballack.

“In terms of football, Wirtz can definitely play for Real Madrid. You can also see it in Jude Bellingham after his move from BVB: when you play with even better players, you become even better,” he added.

Wirtz has a contract with Bayer Leverkusen that runs until the summer of 2027. As things stand, the new German champions have no intentions of selling their prized asset this year.

However, there appears to be an acceptance that the German international will be on the move in 2025.

Other top clubs like Manchester City and Bayern Munich are also understood to be interested, but Real Madrid are likely to beat them in the race should it come down to that next year.

A move for Wirtz, though, could cost in excess of €100 million for Real Madrid should they do indeed decide to proceed with his signing next year.
