Back in 2024, there was such hype surrounding young Real Madrid defender Joan Martinez, who was widely dubbed the next Sergio Ramos.

He even received his unofficial first-team debut, but a cruel ACL injury has seen his development halted ever since.

Having now recovered from the injury, Martinez is on an upward curve as he looks to get his promising career back on track.

According to AS, he took another important step in his Real Madrid journey after earning his first start under Jose Mourinho, with the teenager leaving a positive impression despite receiving a clear challenge from his manager.

The 18-year-old centre-back was selected to start against Fiorentina due to the absences of Raul Asencio and Dean Huijsen.

Mourinho praises teenager but highlights area for improvement

The teenager impressed with his composure in possession and aggressive defending throughout much of the match.

However, Mourinho also made it clear that there is one aspect of the youngster’s game that still requires significant work.

“Moise Kean came into the box against two 18-year-old kids who had a great game, but that is part of the growth… of kids,” Mourinho said after the match.

“They are not yet physically at the level to compete with a beast like Moise, who is a fantastic player.”

The Portuguese coach’s comments reflected his satisfaction with Joan’s performance, but also, in typical fashion, highlighted areas where there is room for improvement.

Chance to re-establish himself

The ACL injury may have taken away two crucial years from Martinez’s career, but he is still young enough to bounce back.

Now fully recovered, the Spanish defender is once again being given opportunities to impress, especially with injury problems affecting other centre-backs in the squad.

If Raul Asencio leaves this summer, Martinez could emerge as the first academy defender called upon whenever Mourinho needs additional defensive cover.

Castilla remains priority

Despite the encouraging signs, Real Madrid are not expected to rush Martinez’s development.

The club’s plan remains for him to become a defensive leader for Castilla this season while continuing to gain experience and physical maturity.

After making 36 appearances and helping the youth side win the UEFA Youth League last season, Martinez is now targeting his official first-team debut.

He is one of the most talented players coming through Madrid’s academy at the moment, and the club need to handle his development carefully.

With the right exposure and maybe a loan move or two later, the teenager might be ready to lead the back line for Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.
