As reported by AS, Real Madrid’s stadium, the Santiago Bernabeu has made history today when it hosted the U20 Intercontinental Cup final.

A total of 52,117 spectators attended the meeting between Real Madrid and Santiago Wanderers in the U20 Intercontinental Cup, setting a new world record for attendance at a youth football match.

What made the occasion even more special is that Real Madrid Juvenil A went on to win the match 3-1 and lift the Intercontinental Cup trophy after a chaotic final at the iconic stadium.

Bernabeu comfortably surpasses previous record

The attendance figure is significantly higher than the previous record, which was set during the Flamengo vs Barcelona match at the Maracana in 2025. That game attracted 45,656 spectators.

The Bernabeu therefore surpassed the previous mark by 6,461 fans, an increase of 14.2%.

The gap is even greater compared with the other recent editions of the tournament.

In 2022, Benfica vs Peñarol at Montevideo’s Estadio Centenario drew 40,579 spectators. The following year, Boca Juniors vs AZ Alkmaar at La Bombonera attracted 37,386.

The lowest attendance came in 2024, when Flamengo vs Olympiacos at the Maracana drew 31,237 fans.

In comparison, the Bernabeu attendance figure was more than 20,800 higher, representing an increase of 66.8%.

The latest attendance is also around 35% higher than the average of the previous four editions, which stood at approximately 38,700 spectators per match.

A triumphant outing

Real Madrid’s Juvenil A setup, managed by Alvaro Lopez, went on to lift the U20 Intercontinental Cup at the Santiago Bernabeu by beating Santiago Wanderers.

The Merengues’ youth team entered the final as reigning UEFA Youth League champions after defeating Club Brugge in May, while Santiago Wanderers had earned their place by winning the Copa Libertadores at the same age level.

Daniel Yanez gave the hosts the lead before the South American outfit equalised after the break through Christian Silva despite being down to ten men.

Substitute Fran Santamaria handed Real Madrid the lead again in the 81st minute, making it 2-1, before Santiago Wanderers lost the plot and saw two more players get sent off, leaving them with only eight players on the field.

Roberto Martin then added the third for Real Madrid deep into stoppage time to kill the tie and secure the trophy for his team.

Real Madrid summer signing already losing prominence under Jose Mourinho

Bernardo Silva was one of Real Madrid’s headline signings last summer. The Portuguese midfielder arrived on a free transfer from Manchester City and appeared destined to become the creative successor to Toni Kroos and Luka Modric in the middle of the park.

Indeed, with the club having not signed a new central midfielder, many within Real Madrid saw the veteran star as a solution to the issue.

Manager Jose Mourinho made him a starter from the very beginning in pre-season, but not in his usual role on the right. Instead, he deployed his compatriot as a deep-lying playmaker in the midfield double pivot.

A change in circumstances

Silva failed to have the expected influence when operating in a deeper role in midfield in the chances he got.

Combined with the emergence of Arda Guler and Aurelien Tchouameni’s return to fitness, the Portuguese international has now lost his place in the starting line-up and dropped to the bench.

Bernardo’s situation became particularly striking against Villarreal this past Saturday at the Santiago Bernabeu, when he did not play a single minute.

Limited opportunities under Mourinho

Bernardo has played six matches for Real Madrid, starting three and coming on as a substitute in another three.

He did not feature against Villarreal or Elche, while his only appearance in the last three matches was a little over 10 minutes against Atletico Madrid. He was not used regularly by the Portugal national team during the international break either.

Across Real Madrid’s eight La Liga fixtures, Silva has accumulated just 282 minutes of playing time.

The Champions League now presents another opportunity for the former Manchester City captain, who has yet to make his European debut for Real Madrid this season.

He missed the match against Inter Milan because he was still serving a suspension carried over from his time at the Etihad Stadium last season.

It remains to be seen whether Mourinho will give him an opportunity against AS Roma in the coming week.

For now, the midfielder’s reduced playing time suggests that the Portuguese coach has lost some of his faith in a player who arrived with high expectations after leaving Manchester City.
