Real Madrid’s stance on signing a new striker this summer – report
Jose Mourinho’s arrival has really accelerated transfer plans at Real Madrid, with Los Blancos moving at a rate of knots to wrap up new signings.
Madrid have already announced three signings: Denzel Dumfries, Ibrahima Konate and Marc Cucurella. They also have a deal wrapped up for Bernardo Silva.
There has been a lot of chatter surrounding Real Madrid signing a new striker this summer.
According to Mario Cortegana of The Athletic, signing a striker is not currently at the top of Madrid’s list, but it has also not been ruled out.
Madrid have attacking depth already
Real Madrid’s squad is filled with attacking options. They have the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Gonzalo Garcia as strikers, while Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo, Brahim Diaz and Franco Mastantuono are also part of the squad.
That does not mean Madrid are perfectly covered in every scenario. It simply means the club do not appear desperate, especially considering the contract uncertainty of Vinicius Jr.
With so many options spread across the squad, Madrid have to be careful before adding another forward who may not have a clear role.
That said, Madrid’s attack right now is not built around a classic No. 9, and if Mourinho wants a profile like that, they may have to dip into the market.
No need to force the market
Madrid should be careful and not get sucked into the trap of buying for the sake of it.
A striker signing only makes sense if the player brings something the squad clearly lacks, such as penalty-box presence, aerial strength, hold-up play or reliable depth without demanding a guaranteed starting role.
That is not an easy overlap to find. Elite strikers will want regular game time, whereas a slightly less proven profile might not be able to handle the pressure of playing for Madrid.
The club must always chase improvement, but not every market gap deserves a big transfer. Sometimes, all it means is that they have to trust Gonzalo Garcia more.
A flexible stance makes sense
Keeping the door open is still wise. Injuries, departures or unexpected market chances can change priorities quickly, especially during a long summer window.
For now, this seems to be a very sensible, flexible stance to take. The club are not ignoring the striker position, but they are not prioritising it either.
If a market opportunity appears, Madrid must take a good look at it, but it remains to be seen how things play out on this front in the coming weeks.
In what will come as a pleasing development for fans, Fabrizio Romano reports that Real Madrid forward Rodrygo could make a comeback from his injury earlier than expected.
The 25-year-old Brazilian international has been out of action since March after suffering an ACL injury during a La Liga game against Getafe.
Due to the complete rupture of the ACL, coupled with associated meniscus damage, it was suggested that the attacker was staring at a lengthy time out on the sidelines and might not return until 2027.
In fact, the forward’s father, Eric Goes, recently stated in an interview that the Real Madrid ace could be back in February next year, just before the business end of the campaign.
Rodrygo could be back in December
However, as per the update from Romano, Rodrygo’s comeback could happen well before that expected date.
Indeed, if things continue to progress at the current rate, the 25-year-old attacker might return to action in December or by January 2027 at the latest.
This will come as a welcome boost for Jose Mourinho & co., considering that Rodrygo is a valuable player for the team.
Even though he had endured a tough spell prior to his form, the Brazilian’s versatility, work rate off the ball, and eye for a goal make him an asset.
Rodrygo eager to be back at his best
The update from Romano further states that Rodrygo feels very grateful to Real Madrid for all the help and support they have given him during this difficult phase of his career.
As such, the Brazilian international has made it a mission to return to action in the best shape possible and make an impact from the get-go.
The attacker has only recently begun working on the pitch with the ball indicating the significant progress he has made on the road to recovery.
And, if there are no setbacks, Real Madrid could recover one of their ace attackers before the end of the current year.
So far in his career, Rodrygo has made 297 appearances for Real Madrid, scoring 71 goals. He has a contract with the club until 2028.
