Despite being in contention for not just one but two trophies this season, Real Madrid are still gearing up for a busy summer ahead – one that may involve multiple changes to the squad.

The potential acquisitions of Kylian Mbappe, Alphonso Davies and Leny Yoro have been documented. But on the flip side, there are several existing stars who might be on the exit ramp.

Real Madrid still keen on offloading Mendy

One of the players facing an uncertain future at the Bernabeu is Ferland Mendy. The left-back’s future has always been a hot topic at Real Madrid over the past 12 months.

And as we approach the summer transfer window, it appears Mendy could be closing in on his departure from Santiago Bernabeu.

According to Fichajes, Ferland Mendy’s recent performances have not compelled Real Madrid to change their mind about the left-back, whose departure is seen as one of the sources of revenue for the club.

Mendy has emerged as one of Real Madrid’s best performers in recent weeks. He most notably starred in the narrow win over Mallorca on Saturday.

Thanks to his flexibility and speed, Mendy has been able to establish himself as Carlo Ancelotti’s go-to left-back, ahead of Fran Garcia.

Even at Real Madrid, there is great satisfaction over Mendy’s performances. But that does not change the fact that the defender could be on the exit ramp this coming summer.

Will Mendy’s exit fund move for Davies?

The report goes on to suggest that Real Madrid see Mendy’s departure as a key to unlocking the acquisition of Davies, the club’s top target in the fullback position.

It appears Los Blancos see the Bayern Munich superstar as a definite upgrade over Mendy, which is why they are not willing to take note of the Frenchman’s recent performances.

The season is far from over, though, and if Mendy continues to perform well, it will put immense pressure on the board to rethink their strategy ahead of the coming summer.

Sorry, but Mendy has never been able to come close to his successor, Marcello’s exploits in that left back area. Mendy has the physicality, but he’s very indecisive in his passes, and lacks confident to move forward and supply his attackers as Marcelo used to do in his passes to Ronaldo that made both Ronaldo and Madrid to score so many crucial goals those days. I think Alphonso Davies and Fran Garcia could change the dynamics on that left flank for Madrid for the better.

Shocking Modric, Vinicius, Cristiano fact makes Real Madrid fans ‘feel old’

Luka Modric is set to stay with Real Madrid for another season, meaning he will have played more seasons with Vinicius Jr. (7) than he did with Cristiano Ronaldo (6).

Feeling old yet? We thought so too!

Modric joined Real Madrid in the summer of 2012 after four seasons with Tottenham Hotspur. On the other hand, Vinicius Jr. joined Real Madrid in 2018.

By the end of the 2023/24 season, Modric and Vinicius will have spent six seasons together. This is the same number of seasons Modric played with Cristiano Ronaldo, who was at Madrid from 2009 to 2018.

However, with Modric set to stay for another season, he will surpass that, playing more seasons with Vinicius than with Ronaldo, the club’s all-time top scorer.

A new contract for Modric

It is important to note that Real Madrid and Modric have reached an agreement in principle for his contract renewal for another year.

At 38, Modric’s contract was set to expire at the end of the current season. For a while, it seemed the Croatian star might leave Santiago Bernabeu this summer.

However, things have changed recently, and Real Madrid have decided to offer him a new contract.

Interestingly, Real Madrid have also offered a renewal to Toni Kroos with club president Florentino Perez personally involved in the negotiations.

Modric and Kroos will continue

Reports suggest that Modric has agreed to the new proposal, with an agreement in principle now in place. It is also expected that Kroos will accept his offer, meaning Real Madrid will keep both veteran players for another season.

The Croatian was reportedly willing to accept a pay cut and a reduced role in the team to continue playing for Real Madrid. This flexibility may have sped up the agreement process.

His willingness to adapt to a reduced role and accept a pay cut has likely influenced the club’s decision to renew his contract for one more year.
