Three key battles that could decide Liverpool vs Real Madrid
Anfield is set to host one of the most anticipated fixtures of the UEFA Champions League group stage – Liverpool versus Real Madrid.
Two of Europe’s most decorated clubs will meet again, renewing a rivalry that has produced countless memorable nights.
For Xabi Alonso, returning to England as Real Madrid’s manager is special, but his focus will be purely on maintaining Los Blancos’ flawless start to their European campaign.
Real Madrid have been perfect in the group so far, winning all three of their matches, which is an identical record to Liverpool.
Liverpool, under Arne Slot, have been fighting to restore confidence after a difficult spell in the Premier League.
Their 2–0 victory over Aston Villa eased some pressure, but their inconsistency remains a concern.
While they have impressed in Europe by beating Atletico Madrid, Galatasaray, and Eintracht Frankfurt, facing Real Madrid is a different challenge altogether.

Konate vs Mbappe – French fire meets speed
The most eye-catching battle of the night will be between Ibrahima Konate and Kylian Mbappe.
Real Madrid’s star forward has been unstoppable this season, already netting 18 goals across all competitions.
His pace, finishing, and movement make him a nightmare for defenders and Konate will need the game of his life to contain him.
Konate, meanwhile, has had a mixed season so far. His form has fluctuated, but he knows tonight could be his stage to shine, especially given that Real Madrid are tracking him for a potential move in 2026.
The irony of defending his future employers’ best attacker won’t be lost on him.
Still, Mbappe thrives in big moments, and his understanding of high-pressure nights could tilt this duel in Madrid’s favour.
Salah vs Carreras – Veteran vs rising star
Even at 33, Mohamed Salah continues to be Liverpool’s most consistent attacking outlet.
His explosiveness may have waned slightly, but his knack for finding space and exploiting gaps remains unmatched.
The Egyptian has managed three goal contributions in nine previous appearances against Madrid and will aim to improve that tally.
Waiting for him will be Alvaro Carreras, one of Madrid’s breakout stars under Alonso.
The 22-year-old Spaniard has been a revelation this season, missing just one match and playing every other minute without being substituted.
This duel between Salah’s experience and Carreras’ youthful energy will be fascinating, as the Real Madrid full-back looks more than capable of meeting the challenge.
Gravenberch vs Bellingham – Midfield genius at work
After a somewhat uneven start to the season, the Englishman has rediscovered his spark, scoring in three consecutive games, including winners against Juventus and Barcelona.
His intelligent movement into attacking spaces has been a hallmark of Madrid’s play.
In fact, Bellingham’s ability to time late runs into the box often leaves defenders stranded and goalkeepers helpless.
Liverpool’s answer to him will be Ryan Gravenberch, whose defensive numbers at Anfield in the Premier League are impressive, averaging 1.8 interceptions and three tackles per game.
His reading of play could frustrate Bellingham at times, but given the latter’s form, stopping him completely may prove impossible.
Real Madrid will lock horns with Elche CF away at Estadio Manuel Martinez Valero later tonight in Matchday 6 of the 2026/27 La Liga season.
The Merengues are currently second in the league standings with four wins and one defeat from five games, three points behind Barcelona, who are yet to drop a single point this term, and have looked unstoppable.
Given the situation, Real Madrid know there is no room for slip-up, even though it is still very early in the season.
Jose Mourinho’s men have not been particularly convincing away from home this term, having just about managed to beat RCD Espanyol in their opening match before falling to their only defeat of the campaign against Real Betis.
The hope will be to address that issue and put in a strong performance while collecting all three points heading into the derby against Atletico Madrid later in the week.
Going into the match, Los Blancos have not received any new fitness boosts, with Eder Militao, Rodrygo Goes, and Ferland Mendy still unavailable.
However, there will likely be some rotations with an eye on the derby, and here’s how Mourinho could set his team up against Elche tonight.
Defence
Trent Alexander-Arnold has had to share minutes with summer signing Denzel Dumfries so far this season, but will be hoping to make the right-back spot his own with a convincing performance tonight against Elche.
Meanwhile, on the left, Alvaro Carreras is expected to retain his place after a brilliant display at the weekend against Rayo Vallecano, which would also allow Marc Cucurella to be protected before the derby.
At centre-back, Dean Huijsen is expected to return to the starting lineup, at the expense of Antonio Rudiger, and partner with Ibrahima Konate.
Thibaut Courtois is the undisputed starter in goal for Real Madrid and will continue his search for a second clean sheet this season.
Midfield
While Aurelien Tchouameni has returned from his injury layoff, he is unlikely to be rushed back by Mourinho. As such, the Frenchman is likely to feature off the bench once again tonight at Elche.
Instead, the double pivot pairing of Federico Valverde and Bernardo Silva is expected to take the field once again, with Eduardo Camavinga also having to settle for a spot among the substitutes.
Jude Bellingham has started all of Real Madrid’s matches so far this season and given his form and importance to the team, Mourinho will not rotate him tonight against Elche.
Attack
Yan Diomande made his first start at Real Madrid last weekend against Rayo Vallecano but failed to make the best impression.
Meanwhile, Arda Guler was once again brilliant for Los Blancos after coming on as a substitute, making a strong case for him to be reinstated to the starting XI on the right wing.
As for the left side of the attack, Vinicius Jr. will retain his place, hoping to find his best form after a rather slow start to the campaign.
Kylian Mbappe, who has now scored six goals in La Liga this season, will spearhead the attack, hoping to end his run of seven months without scoring away from home in the league.
