Tottenham uninterested in selling €60 million-rated mainstay amid Real Madrid links

Question marks over the continuity of Nacho Fernandez coupled with David Alaba’s injury woes mean one of Real Madrid’s primary objectives this summer will be to sign a new central defender.

LOSC Lille starlet Leny Yoro has widely emerged as Real Madrid’s top choice. But the top brass at Los Blancos are open to exploring other options as well.

In recent days, Real Madrid have been linked with a move for Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero, who has established himself as a prime Premier League defender since moving to North London.

Tottenham not interested in selling Romero

Real Madrid’s bid to sign Cristian Romero, however, appears to have hit a major roadblock.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham Hotspur have no interest in offloading their star defender in the coming summer.

This recent development coming in from Spurs is hardly a surprise, as Romero has become the backbone of the team’s defence in the last few years.

Since joining the club in 2022, Romero has appeared in almost 100 competitive matches, impressing onlookers with his aggression and leadership qualities.

What should be Real Madrid’s play here?

It appears very difficult for Real Madrid to push through a move for Romero this summer without the approval of Tottenham Hotspur.

The player is contractually bound to Spurs until 2027, giving the Premier League outfit enough leverage to hold on to Romero’s services.

Real Madrid, therefore, must shift their gaze elsewhere. As mentioned earlier, Leny Yoro has emerged as the club’s top target in defence, although the Frenchman’s valuation has become a pain point for Los Blancos.

There are several other alternatives available in the market. But just how Real Madrid go about it remains to be seen.

Real Madrid star presented with golden opportunity to seal Ballon d’Or triumph

With the Euro and Copa America finals approaching, the period for Ballon d’Or 2024 consideration is about to close.

These final two matches represent the last opportunities for frontrunners of the individual award to make a significant impact.

Given their dominant domestic seasons, Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Jr. are top contenders for the award. However, Vinicius’ early exit with Brazil widens the field of candidates.

Bellingham’s golden opportunity

Now, Jude Bellingham has a golden opportunity to secure the Ballon d’Or if he leads his team to victory in the Euros.

Taking on Spain in the finals, a victory would ensure that the Champions League winner is awarded a first-place position on the Ballon d’Or podium.

His impressive stats at the Euros coupled with his two match-winning goals strengthen his chances of achieving victory. And a triumph on such a grand stage would cap off a stellar season, making a strong case for his candidacy.

However, if Spain clinch the title in the final, the competition for the Ballon d’Or becomes much more open.

Given the Ballon d’Or’s tradition of placing significant importance on performances in international tournaments, the prospect of a Spanish player winning the award increases considerably if Spain wins the final.

In that case, Rodri stands as one of the frontrunners. Having won the Premier League with Manchester City and proving himself one of Spain’s most crucial performers in midfield, he would be a legitimate candidate.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid’s very own Dani Carvajal also would be a realistic option. He contributed considerably to Los Blancos’ trophies and scored the opener in the UEFA Champions League final.

The Euro final is pivotal for Bellingham’s Ballon d’Or prospects. Winning and performing well could secure the award for him. Finalists will be announced on September 4, with the grand ceremony set to take place on October 28.
