Twist in the tale: Exit-linked winger set to stay at Real Madrid for 2022/23

In a shocking turn of events in the Spanish capital, reports by Diario AS state that Marco Asensio has had a change of heart, and is now certain he wants to stay with Real Madrid for the next season and fight for his place in the squad.

The Spanish winger has spent the majority of his career with Los Blancos having signed with the club in the summer of 2014 from Mallorca. The winger has had a somewhat mediocre career with Madrid considering the talent and expectations that came along with his transfer.

It had been reported all summer that Asensio would be on his way out of Madrid, having lost his place in the squad. With rumours circling him and his status as a Madrid player, it seemed almost sure that the 26-year-old would be on the list of departures from Madrid.

The main reason for his desire to move on from the 14-time European Champions was the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The winger believed that the only way for him to make the squad of the Spanish National Team would be to play week-in and week-out, something that would be difficult with Madrid.

However, the departures of Gareth Bale, Borja Mayoral, Luka Jovic and Isco, plus the failed attempt to sign Kylian Mbappe this summer, have given the winger hope of competing for the starting position again.

However, the truth remains that barring any injuries Asensio may find it difficult to break into the role of a starter given the form of Vinicius Junior on the left, and Rodrygo on the right.

The winger will see his contract run out next season, and it seems unlikely that Real Madrid will give him another contract if he does not perform at the top of his game.

Neither does it seem likely that the Spaniard would want to continue at the club past the next season, if he is unable to break into the first team.

Real Madrid are in for a busy summer ahead. While the club are expected to undergo a massive squad overhaul, they are also facing pressure to renew the contracts of some of the most established players in the squad.

Luka Modric is among the list of veterans, who have their contracts expiring at the end of the season. At the age of 37, there has understandably been a layer of uncertainty over his future at Santiago Bernabeu, especially amid interest from Saudi Arabian entities.

The Saudi league has reportedly offered Modric the opportunity to join any club of his choice in the Middle East nation, with a two-and-a-half-year contract worth €40 million per season.

But in a recent media interaction, Predrag Mijatovic, former Real Madrid player and close friend of Modric, has backed the veteran Croat to continue at Santiago Bernabeu.

“When Luka Modric is well, Real Madrid plays much better. His wish is to renew one more year,” said Mijatovic (h/t El Larguero), who played for Real Madrid from 1996 to 1999, featuring in 118 competitive matches for the club.

Mijatovic’s comments confirm recent reports suggesting how Modric is leaning towards a prolonged stay at Bernabeu. It appears the ageing midfielder has no desire to accept the lucrative terms coming from Saudi Arabia just yet.

The former Tottenham star is confident of his abilities to continue at the highest level for at least another year before he can the next and final step in his career.

Since joining Real Madrid in 2012, Modric has featured in 462 competitive matches, racking up 36 goals and 74 assists. His contributions have been crucial to the club’s success over the past decade. Whether or not the midfielder is now willing to extend his stay for a further year remains to be seen.
