Speaking after the Court of Justice of the European Union’s ruling on the Super League earlier today, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has fired shots at Real Madrid and Barcelona, the only two clubs supporting the project currently.

Earlier today, the CJEU ruled that UEFA and FIFA abused their dominant position when acting against the creation of the Super League by threatening the clubs involved in the project with sanctions.

This ruling potentially opened the door for the Super League project to relaunch in the future, with A22, the company backing the renegade tournament, even proposing a new and revamped format involving 64 teams.

Real Madrid and Barcelona continue to stand in support of the project but have not been joined by any other teams as top clubs across Europe are distancing themselves from the Super League.

Indeed, the likes of Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Manchester United, PSG, Atletico Madrid, and AS Roma are some of the European clubs that have rejected the idea of joining the project.

Within Spain itself, teams like Valencia, Villarreal, Sevilla, and current La Liga leaders Girona have also expressed their opposition.

As such, UEFA president Ceferin has mocked Real Madrid and Barça over the Super League, saying: “They can create whatever they want. I hope they have a wonderful competition with only two clubs.”

“I’m not sure if Madrid and Barcelona know what they are doing. Football is not for sale,” he further added.

Discussing the CJEU ruling, Ceferin noted: “We see the decision as an opportunity to improve some rules. But football remains united, that’s why all stakeholders are talking together.

“There is a stark contrast between the ECJ press summary and the ruling itself. The ruling is really positive.”

Taking another swipe at the Super League, he added: “I have the feeling that A22, now that it’s coming up to Christmas, have seen a big box. They were super happy, but when they opened the box they saw that it didn’t really have much in it.”

UEFA, FIFA, and ECA continue to oppose the Super League while the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, and Ligue 1 have also issued statements rejecting it. But Real Madrid and Barça remain steadfast in their support of the project.

Luka Modric is set to stay with Real Madrid for another season, meaning he will have played more seasons with Vinicius Jr. (7) than he did with Cristiano Ronaldo (6).

Feeling old yet? We thought so too!

Modric joined Real Madrid in the summer of 2012 after four seasons with Tottenham Hotspur. On the other hand, Vinicius Jr. joined Real Madrid in 2018.

By the end of the 2023/24 season, Modric and Vinicius will have spent six seasons together. This is the same number of seasons Modric played with Cristiano Ronaldo, who was at Madrid from 2009 to 2018.

However, with Modric set to stay for another season, he will surpass that, playing more seasons with Vinicius than with Ronaldo, the club’s all-time top scorer.

A new contract for Modric

It is important to note that Real Madrid and Modric have reached an agreement in principle for his contract renewal for another year.

At 38, Modric’s contract was set to expire at the end of the current season. For a while, it seemed the Croatian star might leave Santiago Bernabeu this summer.

However, things have changed recently, and Real Madrid have decided to offer him a new contract.

Interestingly, Real Madrid have also offered a renewal to Toni Kroos with club president Florentino Perez personally involved in the negotiations.

Modric and Kroos will continue

Reports suggest that Modric has agreed to the new proposal, with an agreement in principle now in place. It is also expected that Kroos will accept his offer, meaning Real Madrid will keep both veteran players for another season.

The Croatian was reportedly willing to accept a pay cut and a reduced role in the team to continue playing for Real Madrid. This flexibility may have sped up the agreement process.

His willingness to adapt to a reduced role and accept a pay cut has likely influenced the club’s decision to renew his contract for one more year.
