Liverpool are looking at their options as they prepare for a potential change in the dugout. The English side is currently dealing with a difficult season and the future of their manager, Arne Slot, is under heavy scrutiny.

According to recent reports, Liverpool have reached out to Real Madrid to inquire about Xabi Alonso.

The Spanish coach left his position at Valdebebas in January 2026, and he has remained a free agent since then. He notably received support from former colleague Iker Casillas, who criticised the decision to fire the manager.

Because Alonso is a top candidate to take over at Anfield, the Liverpool board wanted to get a first hand account of his work during his time in the Spanish capital, reports Diario AS.

The relationship between Real Madrid and Liverpool is based on mutual respect and trust. Despite some tension in the past regarding the situation of Trent Alexander-Arnold, the two clubs still maintain open lines of communication.

Liverpool executives viewed this call as a way to receive a recommendation letter for Alonso before committing to a multimillion dollar project.

The situation at Liverpool is tense because the club invested $487 million in the transfer market last summer.

Despite this massive spending, Arne Slot has not been able to deliver the expected results. This has led many former players and fans to call for the appointment of Alonso, who is a legendary figure at both clubs.

However, Liverpool still have some doubts. They are aware that Chelsea is also interested in Alonso, which could complicate matters.

By speaking with the hierarchy at Real Madrid, Liverpool hoped to clear up any unknowns regarding why Alonso left Madrid and how he managed the dressing room.

Real Madrid will be looking to pick up their fifth win of the 2026/27 La Liga season when they take on Elche CF at Estadio Manuel Martinez Valero later tonight.

With 12 points from five games, Los Blancos are currently second in the league table, three points below leaders FC Barcelona.

As such, the Spanish capital club will be eager to get the win and close the gap to the top.

Guler starts, Bellingham rested

Ahead of kickoff, Real Madrid have announced the starting lineup that will take the field against Elche, with Jose Mourinho making some important changes.

For starters, Arda Guler is back in the lineup after appearing as a substitute in the win over Rayo Vallecano.

Interestingly, however, he starts in the attacking midfield role, with Mourinho opting to rest Jude Bellingham, who has started all of Real Madrid’s games so far.

That also means that Yan Diomande retains his place in the team, starting for a second time in a row on the right wing. Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr. continue in their respective positions in attack.

Another notable change sees Aurelien Tchouameni make his first start of the season after recovering from injury and making two appearances off the bench.

He replaces Bernardo Silva as Federico Valverde’s partner in the middle of the park.

Meanwhile, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Marc Cucurella come in as full-backs, while Ibrahima Konate and Dean Huijsen slot in at centre-back in front of goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
