Federico Valverde endured a difficult night as Uruguay crashed out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a 1-0 defeat to Spain in their final Group H fixture. 

However, beyond Uruguay’s elimination, much of the attention centred around the Real Madrid midfielder’s reaction after being substituted by Marcelo Bielsa during the second half.

Spain’s victory secured their place in the knockout stages, while Uruguay’s disappointing World Cup campaign came to an abrupt end. 

For Valverde, who captained the Uruguay national team against Spain, the evening became even more frustrating after a controversial decision from Marcelo Bielsa.

Valverde’s surprising substitution

With Uruguay trailing and needing a goal to keep their World Cup hopes alive, Bielsa decided to make a major change in the 57th minute by withdrawing Federico Valverde and introducing Federico Vinas.

The decision immediately sparked debate, given Valverde’s importance within the Uruguay setup. 

The Real Madrid midfielder has been one of the leaders of the national team in recent years, but against Spain, he struggled to influence proceedings as Uruguay found it difficult to establish control in midfield.

Bielsa could have altered the tactical setup at half-time, but instead chose to wait until the second period before taking off his captain in a move that many interpreted as a statement during Uruguay’s World Cup elimination.

As soon as Valverde saw his number appear on the board, the Real Madrid star headed directly towards the touchline without attempting to delay the restart. 

Once he reached the bench, though, his frustration became evident. He covered his mouth with his shirt and appeared visibly upset, while members of the Uruguay coaching staff intervened to calm him down. 

The images became one of the defining moments of Uruguay’s exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Bielsa explains Valverde’s substitution

After the match, Marcelo Bielsa addressed the decision to substitute Valverde and insisted that the change was purely tactical.

The Uruguay manager explained that he wanted his side to commit more players forward as they searched for an equaliser against Spain.

“I wanted the team to have more presence in attack,” Bielsa stated.

Despite the tactical adjustment, Uruguay failed to break down the Spanish defence and their World Cup journey ended at the group stage.
