Real Madrid may have a captaincy debate to resolve this summer. It looked like Federico Valverde was the chosen one to be Los Blancos’ captain going forward.

However, it has now emerged that Vinicius Jr is also desperate to wear the armband and that Florentino Perez is not convinced by the Uruguayan’s captaincy credentials.

Speaking on Radioestadio Noche, Alberto Pereiro said, “I have the feeling that there’s a pending conversation about the captaincies at Madrid.”

“Florentino is not at all convinced about Valverde’s captaincy.”

This is quite surprising because Valverde has long been viewed as one of the future captains of the Spanish giants.

He has seniority, plays with a lot of passion, always leaves everything out there for the badge and has mostly conducted himself with the utmost professionalism.

Valverde’s case is still strong

It would be unfair to dismiss Valverde’s leadership credentials. He has earned huge respect through consistency, sacrifice and the way he plays for the shirt.

Valverde is not a loud, theatrical leader. His captaincy case is built on the example: running, covering, competing and accepting responsibility wherever the team needs him.

That kind of leadership matters at Madrid, especially in a squad full of stars and new arrivals. A captain does not always have to be the biggest personality in the dressing room.

Still, if Florentino truly has doubts, the club will need to handle the issue carefully. Captaincy at Real Madrid is not a symbolic decoration.

It carries weight in the dressing room, with the fans and in front of the media.

The Vinicius angle changes the picture

The timing is also interesting because Vinicius Junior is reportedly very eager to become a Real Madrid captain. That adds a different layer to the conversation.

Vinicius is one of the club’s global faces and a player Florentino has defended strongly for years.

Giving him a bigger leadership role could also help reinforce his bond with Madrid during renewal talks.

That said, Los Blancos have to be very careful not to turn the dangling carrot of captaincy into a contract tool in the negotiations with Vinicius Jr.

Valverde offers stability. Vinicius offers star power and symbolism. Both have arguments, but both also bring different questions.

Ideally, this should be Jose Mourinho and the dressing room’s decision, not Perez’s.

Madrid are entering a new cycle, and the captaincy should strengthen the dressing room, not create unnecessary noise.

It remains to be seen who is eventually given the armband at Los Blancos for next season and beyond.
