Chelsea have discussed the possibility of signing €20 million-rated Real Madrid defender

Ferland Mendy has not had it easy at Real Madrid, especially in the past couple of years where he has been bogged down by one injury after the other.

Despite that, the 28-year-old Frenchman continues to enjoy the trust of manager Carlo Ancelotti, who named him the ‘best defensive left-back in the world’ not long ago.

However, Mendy’s contract with Real Madrid expires in 2025 and there has been no renewal offered to the ex-Olympique Lyon ace as yet.

That, coupled with the Merengues’ pursuit of Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies, has given way to speculations about Mendy’s continuity at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Chelsea have discussed Mendy as an option

Amidst this, journalist Simon Phillips is claiming that Chelsea have internally discussed the possibility of signing Ferland Mendy from Real Madrid as an option for January.

The Blues have had tough luck in the left-back position as Ben Chilwell and Marc Cucurella have been struggling with injury issues.

Ian Maatsen was not favoured by manager Mauricio Pochettino and has since been loaned out to Borussia Dortmund.

The situation has forced Chelsea to use Levi Colwill as a makeshift left-back, something that the club wishes to move forward from by signing a natural player for the position.

Several names have been considered as potential options, one of whom happens to be Real Madrid’s Mendy.

January exit unlikely

While Chelsea might be looking at Mendy as an option, it is extremely unlikely that Real Madrid would let him depart midway through the season.

As mentioned earlier, the 28-year-old, whose market value stands at €20 million, is a player that manager Ancelotti trusts immensely.

Furthermore, Fran Garcia has not convinced totally since returning to the Bernabeu in the summer and as such Real Madrid would not want to sell Mendy, at least until the summer, when they hope to sign Davies from Bayern.

Speaking in an interview with Vamos (h/t Mundo Deportivo), Spain manager Luis de la Fuente has acknowledged that Real Madrid ace Jude Bellingham is the No. 1 footballer in the world currently.

Bellingham has enjoyed a spectacular debut season at Real Madrid and has been one of their chief protagonists as the Merengues won the La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup titles and made it to the UCL finals.

Even though his form has somewhat dipped in the latter stages of the season, the England international remains integral to Carlo Ancelotti’s plans and one of Los Blancos’ most important players.

And Spain manager Luis de la Fuente expressed his admiration for Bellingham, saying:

“He is a player who is doing particularly well. It’s a subjective view, but I like Bellingham’s style a lot, I like that type of player, powerful….”

When asked if Bellingham is the No. 1 player in the world at the moment, De la Fuente replied in the affirmative, as he said: “I think so.”

Bellingham has played 40 times in all competitions for Real Madrid this season, racking up a total of 23 goals and 12 assists in the process.

The 20-year-old’s exploits with Los Blancos in his debut campaign have put him in contention for the Ballon d’Or this year.

A strong performance in the finals of the UEFA Champions League next month and a solid run with England at the UEFA Euro 2024 could further his chances of winning the Golden Ball, although his teammate Vinicius Jr. is also an equally strong contender.
