Sometimes the most interesting part of a transfer is not the offer itself, but the intention behind it.

When Real Madrid publicly tabled a €150 million bid for Julian Alvarez, the first reaction was shock, and the second was scepticism. 

After all, Atletico Madrid were never likely to sell their star striker to their fiercest rivals, especially not at a time when the Argentine is considered one of the cornerstones of Diego Simeone’s project.

Which is why Florentino Perez’s move raises an intriguing possibility. 

Rather than a genuine attempt to bring Alvarez to the Santiago Bernabeu, the offer may have been a strategic play designed to achieve several objectives at once, while knowing full well that Atletico Madrid would slam the door shut.

More questions than answers 

Most importantly, the timing of the move naturally raised eyebrows. 

During his presidential campaign, Perez promised supporters that Real Madrid would submit a €150 million offer for a world-class player without revealing the identity of his target. 

That mystery alone generated enormous speculation, with countless names being linked to the club.

When Alvarez was finally revealed as the player in question, the surprise was not his quality but the fact that he plays for Atletico Madrid, one of Real Madrid’s fiercest rivals.

From the moment the offer became public, the chances of Atletico Madrid accepting appeared extremely slim.

Alvarez is not only one of Diego Simeone’s most important players but also a symbol of the club’s ambitions moving forward. 

Selling such a player to Real Madrid would have been politically and sportingly difficult regardless of the amount involved.

That is exactly what makes Perez’s strategy so intriguing.

Fulfilling the obligations?

Right now, there is a strong argument that Real Madrid knew Atletico would reject the proposal. 

In fact, the public nature of the offer, combined with the certainty of Atletico’s refusal, has led many to question whether the bid was ever truly about completing the transfer.

Instead, the move fulfilled an election promise, generated headlines and demonstrated the club’s financial strength. 

If there is one good thing that happened from this approach, it was that it complicated matters for Barcelona to negotiate a lower fee for the Argentine striker in the future.

With Atletico now having publicly rejected €150 million, accepting a smaller proposal from the Blaugrana would become much harder to justify.

It could backfire for Real Madrid

Even if the operation was never expected to succeed, it may still create challenges for Real Madrid in the transfer market.

By publicly revealing a willingness to spend €150 million on a single player, the club has effectively shown its hand. 

Selling clubs across Europe are now aware of the financial muscle available at the Santiago Bernabeu and could become more demanding in future negotiations.

That is particularly relevant because Real Madrid’s summer business is far from complete.

While the arrivals of Ibrahima Konate and Denzel Dumfries are already secured, Jose Mourinho is still believed to be pushing for further reinforcements. 

As a result, Real Madrid may soon discover that the biggest consequence of the Alvarez bid is not the rejection itself, but the message it has sent to the rest of the transfer market. 

Whether intentional or not, Perez has raised expectations and potentially increased the price tag of every other target the club pursues from this point forward.
