Atletico Madrid are bracing themselves for a busy January transfer window ahead as the Spanish giants look to offload a number of unwanted players in an attempt to balance the books.

This is because Atleti faced shock elimination from the UEFA Champions League group stages earlier this season. Finishing fourth in the group meant that they are not only out of UCL, but are also ineligible to play in the UEFA Europa League during the second half of the campaign.

One of the players tipped to depart Atletico Madrid is Matheus Cunha. The club are not willing to carry his wages throughout the rest of the season and believe his sale can be an excellent avenue for the club to generate fresh revenue.

Wolves were primarily the club interested in the services of Cunha. And according to a report from 90 Min, they firmly remain in the chase to sign the Brazilian, who could depart Atletico Madrid on a loan deal with an option to leave the club permanently at the end of the season.

However, the same report suggests that Wolves may face stiff competition in the race to sign Cunha. This is because a number of clubs have already contacted the player’s representative, exploring the possibility of a January switch.

Most importantly, Cunha’s agents have also contacted Premier League’s top guns such as Liverpool, Manchester United and Newcastle United, offering them the opportunity to snap up the player in the upcoming January transfer window.

The loan-friendly option to sign Cunha means there will not be any shortage of suitors for the Brazilian. Even the top clubs may consider going for the former Hertha Berlin starlet, who is known for his skill and versatility in the final third.

Manchester United and Liverpool may entertain the idea of signing a new forward in the upcoming January transfer window. The former have bid goodbye to Cristiano Ronaldo and will need a replacement while the latter will be without Luis Diaz for close to three months.

Chelsea, who were looking for attacking reinforcements following the injury of Armando Broja, have also been offered a chance to sign Cunha.

Therefore, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for Matheus Cunha, who will look to rebuild his career after leaving the Civitas Metropolitano next month.

Having successfully raided FC Barcelona for the signing of Memphis Depay during the January transfer window, Atletico Madrid could look to bring in another player from Spotify Camp Nou come summer.

Indeed, according to SPORT, Atletico are among clubs who are interested in signing Barcelona ace Sergino Dest, who is currently away on loan at AC Milan.

Dest has been out of favour at Barça since Xavi Hernandez arrived at the club back in November 2021. The USMNT right-back was sent out on loan to Milan last summer so that he can play regularly.

The Rossoneri have the option of signing the ex-Ajax man permanently for €20 million, but are unlikely to take it up as the right-back has largely underwhelmed during his time in Italy, playing just 14 games in all competitions.

But, that has seemingly not deterred clubs in La Liga, including Atletico Madrid, who are reportedly willing to take a punt on Dest in the summer.

As things stand, Atletico have Nahuel Molina as their primary right-back, but the Argentine has not been consistent enough in his debut season at the club.

Matt Doherty arrived on a free transfer from Tottenham in January but has only played 12 minutes so far, indicating where he stands in Diego Simeone’s scheme. So, a new right-back might not entirely be ruled out at the Civitas Metropolitano come summer.

Dest, though, is also attracting interest from Sevilla, Valencia and Villarreal, while an unnamed MLS club also want the right-back.

Barcelona, for their part, wish to recoup the €20 million they spent on him almost three years ago, which could become a roadblock for Atletico Madrid if they do indeed pursue the right-back with greater intent.

As things stand, there is just initial interest and there is nothing concrete from Atletico or any clubs. Only time will tell if that changes once Dest returns from his loan spell.
