Turbulent times are upon Manchester City after the English club were found guilty on multiple fronts, and it is clear that the Etihad-based side will face sanctions.

In view of the club’s situation, several European giants have begun maintaining tabs on Manchester City’s superstars hoping for a sudden chance to sign them.

After all, the club could be forced to make massive sales given the sanctions against them, and there is also a good chance players will not want to be associated with the club in the near future.

Erling Haaland, in that sense, stands as a player who could potentially leave the club, and Real Madrid have been maintaining a close eye on the striker.

Major competition enters

Now, as reported by Bernabeu Digital, Real Madrid have a big competitor who have entered the race and it is none other than Bayern Munich.

The Bavarians rate Haaland highly and are alert to any possibility of landing the player from Manchester City in the upcoming transfer windows. If he is made available, they will push for him.

Their entry onto the scene, needless to say, adds serious competition and will possibly increase the hypothetical transfer fee that will be involved as there is likely to be a bidding war.

From Bayern’s perspective, they see the player to be a good fit given his history in Germany with Borussia Dortmund and his effectiveness in front of goal which will make him the perfect Harry Kane replacement.

Over the past five years, most of Real Madrid’s big arrivals have either been for the attacking midfield or the forward department, and they are now stacked with quality in those positions.

The attack not clicking up to expectations is a completely different issue, but there is undeniable quality in the dressing room in Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr., Jude Bellingham, Yan Diomande, Rodrygo, Endrick and others.

The big question for Real Madrid at this stage, thus, is whether a new striker is indeed the need of the hour, especially given what Kylian Mbappe has been producing week in and week out.

Kylian Mbappe marked his 100th UEFA Champions League appearance with a goal against AS Roma, reaching another major milestone in a competition he has dominated throughout his career.

As such, the Real Madrid forward scored his 72nd Champions League goal on Wednesday, moving past club legend Raul Gonzalez on the competition’s all-time scoring list and into fifth place.

Mbappe surpasses Messi and Raul

Mbappe reached 100 Champions League appearances against Roma and marked the occasion with a goal.

At 27 years and 298 days, he became the youngest player to reach that landmark, surpassing Lionel Messi’s previous record of 28 years and 84 days.

As such, Mbappe’s 72 Champions League goals have come across three clubs: six for Monaco, 42 for Paris Saint-Germain and 24 for Real Madrid.

Only Messi and Lewandowski outscored Mbappe

Mbappe’s record becomes even more impressive when measured against other top Champions League forwards during their first 100 appearances.

Robert Lewandowski scored 81 goals in his first 100 matches, while Messi registered 77. Mbappe’s 72 goals place him behind those two players, but ahead of numerous other legendary attackers.

Cristiano Ronaldo remains the Champions League benchmark

Despite moving into fifth place, Mbappe still has a substantial gap to close before reaching the top of the all-time scoring rankings.

Karim Benzema sits ahead of him with 90 goals, followed by Lewandowski on 109 and Messi on 129. Cristiano Ronaldo leads the standings with 140 Champions League goals.

Mbappe’s 72 strikes leave him 18 behind Benzema, meaning the next target in his pursuit of the all-time greats is within reach if he maintains his scoring rate.

Understandably, Ronaldo’s 141 goals remain the benchmark, leaving Mbappe 68 goals short of the record.

The gap is considerable, but the Frenchman has already demonstrated the scoring consistency needed to climb the rankings, and it won’t be a surprise if he breaks his idol’s record.
