Real Madrid’s humiliating 4-0 defeat in El Clasico left fans across the world fuming. The catastrophe was fulled by a combination of factors ranging from the manager to the players. Yet, the popular opinion is that Ancelotti was the primary party at fault for the loss.

The Italian manager’s tactics on the night were absurd. He opted to play Luka Modric as the most advanced central player on the night instead of choosing Luka Jovic or Mariano. Moreover, his decision of starting Nacho over David Abala at left-back to take on Ousmane Dembele did not go down well either.

After the defeat at the Bernabeu, several fans have come out and asked for the resignation of Carlo Ancelotti. According to reports from Fichajes, the chosen candidate by the fans is said to be Xabi Alonso.

The club legend began his managerial career at the Real Madrid U14 setup in 2018. Alonso was then appointed the manager of Segunda B team Real Sociedad B in 2019 and secured promotion to the second division in 2021.

His contract at the Basque side ends on June 30th, and Real Madrid could well be the next team he manages. With over four years of experience under his belt, one would assume he is ready for the big step.

At Los Blancos‘ offices, the move is seen as one similar to Barcelona’s decision to appoint Xavi Hernandez. The arrival of a club legend as the manager lifted the spirit and performance of the Blaugrana team this season. Xabi Alonso could be the ‘Xavi’ Real Madrid need to oversee their long-term rebuild.

With five wins in six La Liga matches, Real Madrid have had a near-perfect start to the new season.

But even when the club have continued to perform well, Los Blancos have through many transformational stages during the course of the past two months.

One of the most prevalent changes has come in the form of Carlo Ancelotti relying heavily on young midfielders, as opposed to old guards such as Luka Modric and Toni Kroos.

Perez not a fan of Kroos-Modric pairing anymore

According to a report from The Athletic, the pairing of Kroos and Modric does not please Real Madrid president Florentino Perez anymore.

This comes shortly after Ancelotti took the gamble of starting the two veterans in midfield for the first time this season, on the weekend against Atletico Madrid.

Unfortunately, the two were unable to make much of an impact, as Real Madrid lost 3-1 to their city rivals.

Ancelotti faced most of the flak, and the Italian did take full responsibility for the defeat. But Modric and Kroos’ underperformance, coupled with Perez’s disapproval of the pairing, should serve as a warning sign for both the players.

What does the future hold?

Real Madrid had to go through a lot to convince Luka Modric and Toni Kroos to prolong their stay at the Santiago Bernabeu for another year.

But everything suggests they are unlikely to continue beyond the end of the season. Modric, in particular, has seen his game-time take a big hit, as Ancelotti continue to trust in Eduardo Camavinga and Federico Valverde.

Although Kroos is playing a key role in mentoring Arda Guler, the German, too, has struggled with game-time, having started only three league matches this term.

Real Madrid, therefore, are logically making the right decision by putting more faith in youngsters, as they brace themselves for a complete transition by the end of the season.
