Real Madrid’s summer rebuild under Jose Mourinho is showing no signs of slowing down. 

After already strengthening the squad with the arrivals of Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries, Bernardo Silva and Marc Cucurella, Los Blancos continue to explore opportunities to further improve the team ahead of the new season.

One player who remains on the club’s radar is Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck. 

As previously reported, the German international has emerged as one of the leading candidates to reinforce Real Madrid’s defence, with Mourinho believed to be a huge admirer of the 26-year-old centre-back.

The Portuguese coach is convinced that Schlotterbeck possesses the ideal profile to thrive at the Santiago Bernabeu, and there are three reasons behind that belief.

Affordable release clause

In today’s transfer market, finding an established international defender entering his prime for a reasonable fee is becoming increasingly difficult.

That is one of the biggest factors working in Schlotterbeck’s favour.

Although the German recently renewed his contract with Borussia Dortmund until 2031, the deal includes a release clause worth around €50 million. 

While that is still a significant investment, it is far from excessive considering current market prices.

Real Madrid are fully aware that elite defenders regularly command fees well beyond €70 million or €80 million.

For a player with Schlotterbeck’s experience in the Bundesliga, Champions League and international football, €50 million could represent excellent value.

Moreover, the fact that he is a left-footed central defender only increases his attractiveness, as players with that profile are particularly difficult to find.

Salary structure suits Real Madrid

Interestingly, transfer fees are only one part of the equation.

Real Madrid have invested heavily in star players over recent years and maintaining balance within the wage structure remains a priority for the club’s hierarchy.

Schlotterbeck’s current salary situation makes him an attractive option from that perspective as well.

The defender reportedly earns a base salary of around €10 million per season, with bonuses potentially increasing that figure to approximately €14 million annually.

Compared to some of Real Madrid’s highest earners, that remains a manageable figure.

Players such as Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham all sit higher in the wage hierarchy, meaning Schlotterbeck’s arrival would not significantly disrupt the club’s existing financial structure.

Complete defender suited to Mourinho’s system 

One of the main reasons Mourinho likes Schlotterbeck is because he offers far more than traditional defending.

The German is comfortable in possession, capable of progressing the ball from deep areas and confident when building attacks from the back.

At the same time, he remains aggressive in defensive duels and strong in one-vs-one situations.

At 26 years old, Schlotterbeck is reaching what many consider the ideal age for a centre-back.

Another quality that often goes overlooked is Schlotterbeck’s contribution in the opposition penalty area.

The defender is a genuine aerial threat and has repeatedly demonstrated his ability to influence matches through set-pieces.

His height, timing and physical presence make him difficult to defend against during corners and free-kicks.

That was evident during Germany’s emphatic 7-1 victory over Curacao at the World Cup, where he found the back of the net with a powerful header. 

Earlier this year, he also scored an impressive headed goal against Bayern Munich despite Dortmund suffering a narrow defeat.

Beyond the statistics and transfer figures, Schlotterbeck simply fits the profile of a player Mourinho has traditionally valued throughout his managerial career.

That combination explains why the German international continues to be viewed as one of the most attractive defensive options available to Real Madrid this summer.
