Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde is currently enjoying one of the finest phases of his career. 

Now a central figure for his country and a key presence in Real Madrid’s midfield, Valverde is embracing quite a leadership role this season.

In a revealing interview, as relayed by Mundo Deportivo, the Uruguayan spoke candidly about aspects of his game and personality that are rarely discussed publicly, offering fans a glimpse into his journey and mindset.

One of the more unexpected topics he touched on was his physical intensity in training. 

Injuring a goalkeeper

Known for his energy and power, Valverde admitted that his strength has occasionally had unintended consequences during sessions.

“I’m not trying to brag – I’m no Hulk – but a lot of times in training, I’ve injured a goalkeeper or two,” the Uruguayan began.

Pressed further on the subject, he went on to recall a specific incident that clearly stayed with him, one involving the son of a club legend.

“They were goalies who weren’t on the first team, but I remember that one of Zidane’s sons, Luca, was on my team, and once I injured his shoulder, and I wanted to die because he was Zidane’s son,” he said with a laugh.

That moment, however, was not an isolated case, as Valverde himself hinted.

“That was one of the times, yes.”

On Zidane and Ancelotti

Beyond those light-hearted admissions, Valverde also took time to reflect on the influence of former Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane, who played a crucial role in shaping his mentality during his early years at the club.

“Zidane helped me develop that kind of character. He gave me a sense of calm and peace, knowing that things would work out for me. 

“On a day-to-day basis, the fact that he asked about my wife and children made me very happy.”

He also reserved high praise for former manager Carlo Ancelotti, highlighting the emotional connection and confidence the Italian instilled in him.

“Ancelotti made me believe in myself. He’s like family to me. I love him dearly. I hope I can cross paths with him again someday. 

“The way he made us feel day to day—that hunger and that desire to win. Ancelotti is the most complete coach.”

Man City hat-trick

Finally, Valverde looked back on one of the standout moments of his season, a stunning performance against Manchester City in the Champions League, where everything seemed to fall perfectly into place.

“Everything went my way against City. I never thought I could score three goals. It was incredible. 

“Those 50 minutes are already unforgettable in my career. The best part was feeling the fans’ love. 

“The day before, I told my wife I hoped I’d score, but three goals? Unthinkable.”
